• Lifeline for Buemi after being discarded by Toro Rosso
• Swiss driver appointed test and reserve driver at Red Bull

Red Bull Racing have thrown a Formula One lifeline to Switzerland’s Sébastien Buemi by appointing him as their test and reserve driver after he was discarded as a race driver by their sister team Toro Rosso.

The 23-year-old will attend grands prix as back-up for the double world champion Sebastian Vettel and the Australian Mark Webber and will also be available to Toro Rosso should they need a stand-in.

“It’s good to remain with Red Bull for another year and have this opportunity with the World Championship winning team,” Buemi said.

“I would prefer to be driving at the races, of course, but working with Red Bull Racing on the development of their car and providing them with feedback throughout the season is the next best thing.”

Buemi has been backed by Red Bull since 2004 and made his race debut in 2009 with the Italian-based Toro Rosso, who will have an all-new line-up next year.

The Red Bull team boss, Christian Horner, said: “He already knows the team well from his time with us in 2008 and has gained significant race experience over the past three years..

“He will complete important test and simulation work for us throughout the year and will be in attendance at each grand prix.”

BBC Forum Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel interview following Korean GP 2011

Qantas has announced its plans to assist Mark Webber in his ambition to obtain his pilot’s licence. The Australian Formula One driver spent some time at Heathrow airport in the cockpit of a Qantas A380 with one of the airline’s training captains, after having expressed a genuine interest in flying. Webber’s ambitions will see him transfer his skill set from the grid to the skies. Qantas will provide mentoring support with one of the airline’s training pilots and time in the Qantas flight simulators, and will recommend an approved pilot training organisation in order for Mark to learn to fly — and are certain his driving skills and his excellent hand/eye coordination will put him in good stead in learning to fly an aircraft. Webber stated that flying has been something that has always fascinated him; and having had the opportunity to fly over the Albert Park Formula One circuit in a Qantas B737 simulator earlier this year really consolidated his passion to fly an aircraft one day. Qantas currently operates up to 28 services each week between the UK and Australia. In 2008 Qantas launched A380 services from London and now operates daily A380 services to Sydney via Singapore and six A380 services per week to Melbourne also via Singapore. The Qantas A380 offers a premium flying experience, including 14 luxurious suites in First, 72 fully-flat Skybed seats in Business, 32 Premium Economy and 332 Economy..
